The South African Polar Research Infrastructure (SAPRI) and South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) were honoured to receive the Certificate of Excellent Exhibition in recognition of its exhibition and contribution to the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation’s (DSTI) inaugural National Science Month launch, held on 4 July at Vaal University of Technology (VUT) in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng.
SAPRI is one of the Department’s research infrastructures established through the South African Research Infrastructure Roadmap (SARIR) and is hosted by the NRF-SAEON Egagasini Node.
The certificate recognises how SAPRI’s and SAEON’s exhibition embodied the National Science Month theme, “Science, Technology and Innovation is for Everyone.” Through innovative, interactive displays and engaging conversations. SAPRI made marine and polar science accessible to a diverse audience, inspiring curiosity and fostering meaningful public engagement.
The SAPRI exhibition created an engaging experience that showcased South Africa’s role in polar and marine research. Two features stood out as clear favourites among visitors: the iconic pumpkin boots worn on Antarctic expeditions, and the virtual reality (VR) experience, which transported guests into remote areas where marine and polar scientists work. For many visitors, touching the pumpkin boots or exploring the VR headsets offered their first real insight into life and research in remote and icy landscapes. These interactive elements not only attracted visitors but also made the SAPRI stand memorable and engaging. The exhibition also highlighted STEM career opportunities and encouraged young people to explore careers in science, while demonstrating the role of science, technology and innovation in addressing environmental challenges and contributing to a sustainable future.
NRF-SAEON exhibition showcased interactive activities (Colour by number remote sensing activity,Marine Sciences career game,weather station demostration) ; that introduced learners to environmental science and the important role SAEON plays in environmental observation and research across South Africa. The exhibition encouraged learners to engage with real scientific tools and gain a better understanding of career opportunities in environmental sciences.

National Science Month, formerly celebrated as National Science Week, was expanded into a month-long programme for the first time this year. It is led by South Africa’s Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) to promote public awareness, appreciation, and engagement with science, technology, and innovation. Every year, organisations across the country host exhibitions, talks, workshops, and interactive activities to inspire curiosity and encourage more South Africans, especially young people, to explore careers and opportunities in science.
