During this quarter, SAEON was mentioned in the media for its contribution to the FLUXNET Shuttle. An article titled New FLUXNET Shuttle Gives Access to an Unprecedented Collection of Ecosystem Flux Data was published in Engineering News on 05 May 2026. FLUXNET published an article on 14 May 2026 titled FLUXNET Data Shuttle GUI launched, and the tern published an article in April 2026 titled Global revolution in ecosystem flux data access.  The articles highlights NRF-SAEON’s contribution to the preparation of South African Flux data into the Flux Shuttle.

The South African Environmental Observation Network, through its research infrastructure EFTEON, operates long-term flux towers in the major biomes of South Africa such as semi-arid Karoo, Savanna, Grassland and Fynbos. The Flux towers continuously measure how landscapes breathe; how much carbon dioxide they absorb or release; how they respond to drought, fire, and land use; and ultimately how resilient they are to climate change. These long-term flux towers are now feeding into the global system.
