ICSHMO 2025: Connecting the next generation of ocean professionals

By Clea Welch, Graduate Student Network Steering Committee Member

The Egagasini Node of the NRF-SAEON Graduate Student Network (GSN) hosted a vibrant and engaging side event during the 14th International Conference on Southern Hemisphere Meteorology and Oceanography (ICSHMO), in collaboration with the South African Polar Research Infrastructure (SAPRI) Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) Group.

This dedicated session created a valuable space for postgraduate students and early career ocean professionals to connect, exchange ideas and gain insights into the diverse career pathways within the ocean sciences.

The session was officially opened by Dr Mary-Jane Bopape, managing director of NRF-SAEON, who highlighted the extensive range of opportunities and initiatives available to students and ECOPs through SAEON. Dr Bopape emphasised the importance of supporting the next generation of marine scientists and outlined how SAEON’s platforms enable networking, skills development and research collaboration.

A key feature of the event was an inspiring panel discussion, moderated by Dr Wade de Kock, SAPRI engagement manager. The panel featured professionals working across a broad spectrum of ocean science disciplines – from research and academia to government, NGOs and industry.

Panellists shared their personal career journeys and offered practical advice on navigating the ocean science landscape. They also fielded questions from the audience, providing guidance on challenges such as securing research funding, building a network and finding mentorship opportunities.

The session closed with Clea Welch, who encouraged participants to stay engaged by joining the NRF-SAEON Graduate Student Network. She shared upcoming GSN activities and reiterated the value of staying connected with peers and senior professionals in the marine science community.
