The NRF-SAEON Egagasini Node, with support from the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), is leading the Ocean20 engagement group to play a leading role in shaping South Africa’s contribution to ocean development. This global initiative, co-convened by the United Nations Global Compact, is part of the broader G20 agenda focused on sustainable ocean development, and includes many partners in an advisory capacity such as the Oceans20 coordinators from Brazil.
The SAEON Ocean20 team with collaborators.
Ocean20 is about more than just policy. It aims to put the ocean at the centre of the G20’s economic and environmental thinking. Through consultations, working sessions and national coordination, the Ocean20 team aims to bring forward themes that matter most to South Africans: capacity development, resilience in coastal areas, inclusive governance and the need for innovation in ocean science and technology.
There is also a strong focus on inclusivity. SAEON and DSTI have worked to ensure that young people, women in science and local communities have had opportunities to contribute meaningfully. Their voices are helping shape the policy recommendations that South Africa will take forward in the Ocean20 process.
As South Africa continues its G20 Presidency through 2025, SAEON will remain a key driver of the Ocean20 agenda. SAEON’s leadership will be central in ensuring South Africa’s vision for a sustainable ocean economy is heard on the global stage.
Through this work, SAEON is helping to position South Africa not just as a participant in global ocean governance, but as a leader in shaping a future where ocean science, sustainability and socioeconomic progress go hand in hand.
