It gives me great pleasure to reflect on some of the progress, achievements and milestones we have reached together at NRF-SAEON in 2024, a year marked by growth and a continued commitment to advancing our vision to establish world-class environmental platforms for the benefit of South Africa, and beyond.
First and foremost, I am proud to highlight the expansion of our team. We welcomed several education officers, technicians and scientists during the year, as well as support staff in the Finance, Supply Chain Management and Human Resources sections, highlighting the rapid expansion of NRF-SAEON. Their expertise and dedication will be instrumental in driving the successful implementation of the South African Research Infrastructure Roadmap (SARIR) programmes and enhancing the NRF-SAEON landscapes.
2024 also marked a historic moment for the National Research Foundation (NRF), as activities for the first-ever award ceremony for staff were initiated. Such recognition not only celebrates individual and collective excellence but also inspires us to strive for greater heights in our respective fields. To all of you who contributed to the success of the NRF-SAEON local event, thank you for your hard work and dedication.
One of the highlights of the year was Alutha Botha, supervised by the Elwandle Coastal Node’s Nozi Hambase, who travelled to the United States to attend the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles as part of our science engagement activities. This opportunity not only showcased the calibre of talent and mentorship within NRF-SAEON but also reflects our commitment to nurturing the next generation of scientists and researchers.

We are immensely proud to celebrate Professor Juliet Hermes’s achievement of a B1 NRF rating in 2024. This prestigious recognition is a testament to her exceptional contributions to marine science and her role as a leader within the scientific community. Prof. Hermes’s achievement highlights the high calibre of research excellence at NRF-SAEON and inspires us all to continue pursuing excellence in our work.
Our CoreTrustSeal-accredited open data platform was honoured with the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF)-South32 Data for Research Award. This accolade is a testament to the vision and hard work of our team, ensuring that data remain accessible and valuable for scientific discovery and policymaking.
The successful launch of the Expanded Freshwater and Terrestrial Environmental Observation Network (EFTEON) is another significant milestone. The launch was marked by a memorable event in the Northern Drakensberg, one of the six EFTEON landscapes. EFTEON represents a major step forward in our ability to monitor and understand complex terrestrial environmental systems. This infrastructure will provide invaluable insights to support sustainable development and environmental resilience.
I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to all who have contributed to the realisation of EFTEON – the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, researchers, technicians and collaborators. Your dedication underscores the importance of partnerships in addressing the pressing environmental challenges we face today.

As we move forward, we invite all stakeholders to join us in leveraging this world-class infrastructure to build a sustainable and resilient society. Together, we can transform data into actionable insights and empower future generations to steward our planet wisely.
Looking ahead, I am confident that 2025 will bring even greater opportunities for NRF-SAEON and our stakeholders. With a strengthened team, new initiatives and a collective vision, we are well-positioned to continue making significant contributions to science, society and the environment.
In closing, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all our stakeholders. We look forward to embarking on another successful year working closely with you.
